Service · Mouth Guards

Protect the smile under the helmet.

Hockey, soccer, basketball, lacrosse. Custom-fit guards stay where they belong, breathe well, and protect teeth from chips, fractures, and concussion-related dental trauma.

Why families choose this service

  • For sports

Hockey, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, football. Custom-fit means the guard stays put and the child can talk and breathe comfortably while wearing it.

  • For grinding or clenching

For children who clench or grind their teeth. A custom mouth guard protects enamel and reduces jaw discomfort.

  • Made to fit, refit as they grow

Pediatric mouths change every year. We re-fit when the bite shifts so the guard always fits properly.

About this service

A store-bought (boil-and-bite) guard works, but only just. It is bulky, it tends to fall out during talking and hard breathing, and most kids end up taking it out mid-game. A custom guard is moulded from an impression of the child's actual teeth so it fits like a second layer of enamel.

For sports, a custom mouth guard protects the front teeth from direct impact, the most common source of pediatric dental trauma. They also reduce concussion risk by absorbing some of the force that would otherwise transmit through the jaw.

For kids who grind or clench, a custom mouth guard addresses a different problem. Bruxism (tooth grinding) wears down enamel, fractures teeth over time, and causes morning jaw soreness. A thin custom guard separates the upper and lower teeth and absorbs the grinding force.

What we make

  • Custom mouth guards for sports in a few colour options (clear, team colours, or coral by request).
  • Custom mouth guards for kids who grind or clench, sized for the current dental development stage.
  • Annual re-fits as the child's teeth and jaw grow.
  • Coordination with orthodontists if the child is in braces or aligners. We make special guards that work with braces.

Common questions

  • How old does my child need to be for a custom mouth guard?+

Most kids can be fitted from age six or seven, once a stable set of teeth is in. For younger children playing impact sports we recommend a guard sized to the primary teeth and re-fitted as the permanent teeth come in.

  • How is a custom guard better than a boil-and-bite?+

Custom guards are thinner, fit better, stay in place during talking and breathing, and protect the actual contact points of your child's bite. Boil-and-bite guards are a starting point but most kids stop wearing them within a few games.

  • How long does a guard last?+

Mouth guards used for sports typically last one to two seasons before needing replacement. Pediatric mouths change shape every year as new teeth come in, so we recommend re-fitting annually. Mouth guards used for grinding tend to last longer, two to three years on average.

  • Will my child still be able to breathe and talk?+

Yes. A custom guard is shaped so that it does not cover the soft palate or interfere with the airway. Talking is slightly muffled but easy.

Most sport guards are made over two visits: impressions at the first, pickup and fit-check at the second. Book the first impression appointment a few weeks before the season starts.
